WHALEY HOUSE RENOVATIONS

Columbia, South Carolina

FME completed an asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint assessment of the Whaley House in Columbia, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The assessment was part of an overall study for the University of South Carolina to determine the feasibility and schematic cost of an adaptive reuse of the building. Developed in coordination with the University, Historic Columbia Foundation, and project architectural team, FME’s assessment evaluated how the presence of asbestos and lead-based paint would affect the historic structure’s proposed renovations. Based on the assessment, FME developed a narrative that described the necessary abatement required to accomplish the adaptive reuse. This narrative was then submitted to a cost-estimating consultant along with the schematic design information to create a cost estimate for the project, which provided stakeholders a comprehensive budget moving forward.

In conjunction with the feasibility study, the University requested that FME and the project architect provide services associated with the exterior stabilization of the historic building. The objective of the stabilization was to address items such as roof leaks, exterior deterioration from age, and structural deficiencies that could lead to future damage of the Whaley House. As a part of this effort, FME developed abatement project design plans and specifications for the removal of lead-based paint from exterior building components of the main house. Subsequently, FME provided project management during abatement operations.
