GEOTECHNICAL DRILLER
FME is searching for an experienced driller to work out of our Richberg, South Carolina Operations Center. The driller will maintain and operate geotechnical drill rigs for subsurface explorations. The ideal candidate has experience performing geotechnical borings, is willing to travel and stay overnight throughout South Carolina and North Carolina, enjoys working outside, and is willing to manage driller helpers. The primary duties will be conducting geotechnical borings and maintaining the drilling equipment. FME’s geotechnical work occurs in roadways, offroad on undeveloped property, and overwater from barges. FME drillers regularly perform drilling with hollow stem augers and with mud rotary methods. Rock coring is also a regular occurrence in our geotechnical explorations.
Under Management by our Geotechnical Field Operations Coordinator, the successful applicant will be able to fulfill the following:
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
- Operate geotechnical drill rig in a correct, safe and efficient manor;
- Maintain geotechnical drill rig including lubrication, cleaning, replace broken parts, and troubleshoot equipment issues;
- Manage driller helper;
- Communicate professionally with geologist staff and engineering staff; and
- Identify unsafe conditions in the field and communicate concerns to the field services coordinator prior to drilling.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma is required;
- Comfortable with outdoor work in all seasons;
- Able to lift 50 lb. of equipment and materials;
- Willing to work independently and proficient at time management;
- Well drilling license in North Carolina and South Carolina or willingness to obtain each within 6-months of employment;
- Ability to track work progress on a daily basis and maintain a legible diary of daily drilling production; and
- Class A CDL driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Field Construction Engineer
FME Consultants is actively seeking highly talented
Field Construction Engineers for immediate employment in Columbia and
encompassing areas of North and South Carolina.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
- Maintaining daily inspection records and overall project notes
- Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation of field site visits and observations
- Documentation of field activities, observations, and testing results on construction projects, and their conformance with (or deviation from) project plans and specifications
- Testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout on construction projects for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, SCDOT, and/or project specifications
- Communication of field and laboratory observations and testing results with Construction Services and Geotechnical Project Management staff, general contractors, and clients
- Assisting Project Management staff with review of field data, disposition of identified construction discrepancies, and preparation of reports
- Preparation of field and laboratory cost estimates and proposals
- Development of relationships with peers in the local engineering and construction communities through participation in local professional organizations
- Ability to take and pass SCDOT Asphalt, Earthwork, Concrete, and Foundation’s exams
- Ability to take and pass ICC Reinforce Concrete, Structural Masonry, Earthwork, Structural Bolting, and Structural Welding exams
- Ability to take and pass CEPSCI Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector exam
- Ability to take and pass the PE exam
QUALIFICATIONS
- BS degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or ability to obtain within 6 months
- EIT Registration or passed the FE exam
- 0 to 2 years of experience with field and/or laboratory geotechnical/construction materials testing
- Willingness to obtain International Code Council (ICC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications in the fields of aggregate, asphalt, soil, reinforced concrete, and masonry, required
- Relevant certifications are preferred but not required
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work and maneuver equipment on uneven ground and around active construction sites
- Willingness to travel out-of-town (and overnight) for short durations
- Ability to routinely lift 40 to 50 lbs. (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering
- Registered EIT with SCLLR or passed FE exam
- Able to read and understand complex plans and/or drawings
- Ability to use a personal computer, construction material testing equipment, and to retain or gain training certifications as needed
- Capable of performing mathematical calculations (computing cubic yards, computing square yards, etc.) and in-depth engineering analysis
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass drug and alcohol test
- Ability to travel out-of-town overnight or longer as required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification in any/all of the NCDOT/SCDOT certifications in Asphalt Roadway Inspection, Concrete inspection, Foundation inspection, Earthwork, Base and Drainage inspection and Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control inspection
- ACI Concrete Field Tech Level 1 Certification
- ICC Soils, Masonry, Concrete, Bolting, and/or Welding Certification
- Experience with material testing procedures required for sampling of construction materials

Construction Inspector
FME is actively seeking highly talented Construction Inspectors for immediate full-time employment in Columbia and Port Royal, South Carolina, and encompassing areas of South Carolina and North Carolina.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
- Monitoring, inspecting, and ensuring all work on assigned projects meets specifications, plans and quality requirements
- Performing construction material testing and reviewing test results for conformance with project contract specifications
- Maintaining daily inspection records and overall project notes
- Reviewing contract plans and specifications for compliance with appropriate standards and contract documents
- Reviewing and responding to contractor correspondence, requests for information, and submittals
- Assisting with review and analysis of construction schedules
- Compiling and reviewing contractor quantities for pay applications
- Performing lab work and testing in accordance with ASTM/AASHTO Standards and Specifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma
- Able to read and understand basic plans and/or drawings
- Ability to use a personal computer, construction material testing equipment, basic survey equipment, and to retain or gain training certifications as needed
- Capable of performing routine mathematical calculations (computing cubic yards, computing square yards, etc.)
- Ability to take and pass certification tests in the fields of Asphalt, Concrete, Erosion Control, Foundations, and Earthwork, Base and Drainage
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass drug and alcohol test
- Ability to travel out-of-town overnight or longer as required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of experience in construction inspection or project management
