VECTOR CONTROL BUILDING UPGRADES
Columbia, South Carolina
FME completed limited asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint investigations for the replacement of the existing windows in Richland County’s Vector Control building. FME’s objective was to determine how the replacement of 21 windows would impact the structure’s interior and exterior materials that may contain asbestos and/or lead.
FME’s asbestos investigation consisted of collecting samples of materials suspected of containing asbestos and assessing the physical condition of those materials found to contain asbestos. The lead-based paint investigation included on-site testing of paints and coatings suspected to contain lead using FME’s handheld Niton XRF analyzer and assessing the physical condition of those materials found to contain lead.
With the investigations revealing asbestos-containing materials associated with the window glazing and caulking, FME prepared abatement design guidelines to provide direction regarding proper preparation, handling, and other aspects of the abatement process. During abatement activities, FME performed project management and oversight, which consisted of on-site monitoring and approval of all abatement work.
