US 176 REPLACEMENT BRIDGE OVER CANNONS CREEK

Newberry County, South Carolina

FME provided geotechnical engineering services for the emergency bridge replacement on US 176 over Cannons Creek. The existing bridge was damaged beyond repair as a result of South Carolina’s historic flood in 2015. The project included demolition and removal of the existing bridge and construction of a new bridge on the existing horizontal alignment, as well as drainage work necessary to tie the new approaches to the existing roadways. The 210-foot replacement bridge was built under a $4.3 million design-build contract.

On an accelerated schedule, FME performed subsurface explorations, laboratory testing, and geotechnical analysis and design for the roadway embankment, bridge foundation, and bridge approach embankments. FME also completed asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint investigations on the existing bridge prior to demolition.

During construction, FME provided support associated with the pile installation plan, general pile driving troubleshooting, drilled shaft installation plan, and drill shaft installation issues. Additionally, FME monitored construction-related vibrations.
