SPANISH MOSS TRAIL PHASE 2
Beaufort County, South Carolina
Phase 2 of the Spanish Moss Trail consists of 2.1 miles of new greenway trail located within the abandoned Port Royal rail line from Depot Road to Parris Island Gateway (US 21) in Beaufort County. Trail improvements included a twelve-foot wide concrete paved trail bed, replacement of existing cross-line pipes with a pre-cast box culvert, and rehabilitation of the existing Ealey’s Trestle over Battery Creek.
FME first performed a subsurface exploration and laboratory testing for the trail and box culvert. After analyzing the field and laboratory data, FME developed pavement design recommendations for the trail and foundation recommendations for the box culvert.
FME then performed an exploration at Ealey’s Trestle Bridge. Geophysical testing using a ground penetrating radar was conducted to provide data on reinforcement locations and patterns within the existing structural elements. Destructive testing was also performed, to include physically removing reinforcing steel and concrete core specimens from the existing structural elements. The recovered specimens were subsequently tested for concrete compressive strength determinations and steel reinforcement tensile strength determinations in FME’s AASHTO-accredited laboratory. Following the exploration, FME analyzed the geotechnical capacity of the concrete pile foundation elements supporting the existing bridge.
During construction of the trail, FME performed earthwork inspections and testing. For the bridge, FME performed concrete inspections and laboratory testing of concrete and reinforcing steel.
