LAKE MONTICELLO DAM C
Jenkinsville, South Carolina
Lake Monticello, a 7,100-acre reservoir along the Broad River, powers SCE&G’s Fairfield Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant and provides water to the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station. During routine permit-related inspections of Dam C, areas requiring more detailed attention were identified.
Hired by SCE&G, FME developed a geophysical and geotechnical exploration approach to better define groundwater flow conditions through and under the dam. FME’s geotechnical engineer and geologist performed a site reconnaissance to gain an understanding of the existing systems that made up Dam C. The dam structure was then surveyed using state-of-the-art surveying techniques.
FME utilized geophysical techniques, including ground penetrating radar and electrical resistivity surveys to gather data on the subsurface. Geotechnical field activities consisted of soil penetration drilling with continuous sampling, as well as cone penetrometer testing with pore pressure dissipation.
Using the survey and field data collected, FME developed a 3D digital terrain model, interpreted the data, and prepared a report of our findings and results of our exploration.
