INDOOR FIRING RANGES
South Carolina
FME completed lead assessments of former indoor firing ranges at twelve South Carolina Army National Guard armory facilities. The assessments were performed to determine whether residual lead contamination was present within the decommissioned firing ranges, as well as to provide recommendations for remedial efforts necessary to clean up the residual lead contamination.
FME’s fieldwork included collecting wipe samples from various surfaces within the former indoor firing ranges; collecting air samples to establish baseline data and determine the amount of airborne lead; and scanning painted/coated building components with FME’s handheld Niton XRF analyzer to quantify the concentration of lead on building components. Air and wipe samples were also sent to an EPA-accredited laboratory to analyze for total lead. Following receipt of field and laboratory results, FME developed tailored lead assessment reports for each facility with our findings.
