CRANE CREEK SANITARY SEWER REPLACEMENT
Columbia, South Carolina
FME performed geotechnical engineering for the replacement of approximately 7,500 feet of the existing Crane Creek Sanitary Sewer outfall that lies south of I-20 and west of the Broad River. The 48-inch replacement is ductile iron pipe (DIP) and runs along Crane Creek and the Broad River from Brickyard Road to Smith Branch outfall. The alignment crosses Crane Creek, Norfolk Southern Railroad, the old City of Columbia landfill, and I-20.
FME advanced soil test borings along the proposed sewer line and performed standard penetration tests at each boring location to evaluate the relative density and consistency of the subsurface soils. In addition, cores of the rock underlying the soil were obtained.
From the field and laboratory results, FME identified rock with high compressive strengths in close proximity to the inverts of the proposed sewer line, as well as landfill debris along a portion of the alignment. This information enabled the City of Columbia to develop a strategy for handling rock removal and landfill debris prior to the project being advertised for bid.
