CAE TAXIWAY A IMPROVEMENTS
West Columbia, South Carolina
FME performed geotechnical services for the $7.5 million improvements to Taxiway A at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). The project consisted of the reconstruction of Taxiway A and widening of connector Taxiway E1.
To provide confidence in a previously performed exploration, FME cut asphalt cores along Taxiway A to measure pavement thickness, base thickness, and the thickness of any cracks captured in the cores. Borings were also conducted to explore the subgrade and obtain soil samples for the proposed Route Bravo Road.
With safety and security being a top priority on airport projects, FME provided SIDA-certified personnel to perform field activities. FME also worked closely with CAE operations staff to avoid delay of air traffic, which operated continuously during our fieldwork.
During construction, FME conducted on-site quality assurance testing of subgrade preparation, graded aggregate base course, asphalt pavement, and Portland cement concrete. FME also provided a curing trailer at the job site to achieve the initial curing requirements of ASTM C31 for beam specimens prior to laboratory testing. Subsequently, FME performed construction materials testing of soils, aggregates, and concrete in our AASHTO-accredited laboratory to verify conformance with project requirements.
