BLUFFTON PARKWAY 5A SEGMENT 2
Beaufort County, South Carolina
Phase 5A, Segment 2 extends the Bluffton Parkway eastward from Buckingham Plantation Road to US 278 near the Hilton Head Island bridges. The project includes construction of a 4,200-foot long flyover bridge segment that crosses several hundred feet of marsh before tying into US 278. It also consists of 4,500 feet of roadway improvements connecting US 278 with Bluffton Parkway.
The flyover is a unique and complex project due to the structure itself, having reverse curves, four different types of foundation systems, four different substructures, and three different superstructures, which all add to the complexity. Other challenges included building in an existing utility corridor and tying the project into the heavily trafficked US 278.
Hired by the County, FME managed all construction activities and provided construction engineering and inspection services, materials testing, environmental compliance inspection services, and structure foundation testing for the project.
