JONES PHYSICAL SCIENCE CENTER NORTH TOWER RENOVATIONS

Columbia, South Carolina

Working for the University of South Carolina, FME completed the design and management of abatement activities in the Jones Physical Science Center in Columbia. The project consisted of the abatement of friable spray-applied fireproofing, selective demolition, and selective upfits of the North Tower. Both design execution and construction had to be conducted under accelerated schedules, so the project could be completed during summer break.

Prior to this project, FME performed a field investigation to assess existing conditions of the known asbestos-containing materials. The purpose of this investigation was to quantify the asbestos and gather information needed to produce the abatement project design plans and specifications. During abatement and construction, FME provided project oversight, which consisted of monitoring the abatement contractor’s quality and progress of work, assisting with issues that arose, assuring work was performed in compliance with the design documents, and coordinating with the contractor, architect, and University. FME also conducted area air monitoring during abatement activities. The collected samples were then analyzed, organized, and assimilated in our onsite laboratory.
